Calling All Readers: Great Children's Book Stores

November 11, 2008

Chicago is full of wonderful resources for new readers -- from free story times at the Chicago Public Library to the reading area available in the Family Tent at Millennium Park during the summer months.  In such a large city, I don't pretend to be able to cover all of the wonderful story times out there (and your favorites are probably neighborhood specific anyway).  But I thought I would tell you about some smaller, independent stores that offer a great selection of children's book (just in time to stock up on holiday gifts for the beginning readers in your life).

The Red Balloon Company. This children's boutique is probably better known for its (pricey but adorable) selection of children's clothes and decor.  But it is also an awesome recourse for children's books.  The Red Balloon Company has done all of the hard work for you -- they have narrowed their selection down to the really good books out there and I have found the sale people to be really helpful in making selections.  I have been known to run in there with about five minutes to shop and declare, "I need some books for a four-year-old girl whose birthday party starts in half an hour."  I always walk out with great selections.  The Red Balloon Company also has an impressive collection of "classics."  Visit theirBucktown or Andersonville location.

The Magic Tree Book Store. This Oak Park institution has been offering a dizzying selection of children's books since 1984.  Their collection of children's books is truly extensive.  The store also hosts special events like free story times, appearances by authors, and "book clubs" for older readers.

Women & Children First.
Bring your daughters to this Andersonville hot spot!  This community-focused, independently-owned book shop focuses on literature related to children and feminism.  I have found that the selection of children's books is pretty awesome.  The store owner hosts a popular story time every Wednesday at 10:30.  They also offer an option to have your child's birthday party during story time which I think is a cool idea for those little ones who just love books (and every guest gets a book to take home).

Your turn.  Which local children's book stores do you love?
