Goodbye Mrs. Goodbee: A Lesson In Giving
November 21, 2008
I was lucky enough to have the chance to review the Mrs. Goodbee Interactive Doll House recently. My kids love playing with this thing. And one of my favorite features is the focus on good manners and good deeds. In keeping with this commitment to community, Learning Curve (the company behindMrs. Goodbee) was kind enough to give me a doll house to donate to a charitable organization of my choice.
We decided to give Mrs. Goodbee to Lydia Home. Located at 4300 West Irving Park Road, Lydia Home serves children and families in need with programs ranging from residential treatment to foster care. Lydia Home says that its vision is for every child to be loved and cared for. Isn't that a simple and beautiful ideal?
So last week, I pack up Mrs. Goodbee in the car and we took her to her new home. On the way, we talked about how much fun Mrs. Goodbee is and how much the children at Lydia Home were going to enjoy playing with it. The staff at Lydia Home was very appreciative for the donation and told us that the children in their preschool would be thrilled with their new toy.
I have to be honest -- I suspect that much of this exercise didn't register with my kids. I think that it is hard for young children to understand the concept of charity. That being said, I think that it is essential that we parents continue to model generosity, compassion, and community involvement so that our little ones do come to understand how important it is to give of yourself to those who are in need.
