A Few Final Thoughts From One Lucky Chicago Mama
June 01, 2009
Today is my last post at Being Savvy: Chicago. As you all know, life with little ones is always busy. I have found life with three little ones to be especially busy. The past few chaotic months have convinced me that I need to devote more energy to fewer projects (my biggest project being enjoying every minute of summer with my kids).
On the occasion of my last post, I wanted to share one last message with my fellow Chicago mamas and papas: We are so lucky to live here. Make the most of it.
Take your kid to the Art Institute. Spend a rainy day wandering hand-in-hand through the Garfield Park Conservatory. Become a regular at the Chicago Children's Museum. Be witness to a butterfly release at the Peggy Notebaert Museum. Rock out together at a children's concert.
Play. Look. Draw. Touch. Splash. Taste. Dig. Spill. Listen.
Get out there and experience Chicago. Your kids will be better for it. And so will you.

Summer in the City: Four Family-Friendly Must-Do's
May 22, 2009
Summer in Chicago is the best. Summer in Chicago with little kiddos is even better. There is so much great stuff to do over the next few months. Don't get overwhelmed. Keep it simple. Keep it focused on family. Here are four things on our summer must-do list.
The Beach. We are so lucky to live in a city with such a beautiful beachfront. If you are looking for a family-friendly spot, check out these recommendations.
Millennium Park. Splash in the fountain. Have a picnic dinner. Catch a concert. Wander through the gardens. Take advantage of the Target Family Fun Festival. You won't believe how much there is to do. And it is all FREE (my favorite part).
The Edible Garden. Give your kids the chance to get their hands dirty and learn about organic gardening at the Edible Garden. This program is sponsored by the Green City Market and takes place in the Farm in the Zoo at the Lincoln Park Zoo on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. It is truly a chance for your kids to get a hands-on experience with how food grows.
Toddler Tunes and Turtles. This is one of my favorite Chicago Park District Programs. Toddler Tunes and Turtlestakes place in various parks throughout the summer. It is a laid-back, free family activity. Kids can play dress up, sing-a-long and pet a real turtle. Check out the Chicago Park District website to find out when this program is coming to a park near you.
Wishing you lots of fun in the sun with your little ones -- no matter what is on your summer agenda!

Summer at Kohl's (You'll Be Glad You Made the Drive)
May 18, 2009
Have you ever made the trek up to Glenview to visit the Kohl's Children's Museum ? Now, don't get me wrong, I don't like to pile all of my kids in the car and head up to Glenview in expressway traffic any more that you do. However, the Kohl's Children's Museum is a pretty great place and if you haven't visited before, this summer is great time to stop by because there is quite a bit going on. Here are a few of the upcoming highlights.
Color Play. Check out this new exhibit open May 19th through September 6th. Color play is designed to be in interactive exploration of the art and science of color. I was checking out the website and cannot get over how many different activities are part of this exhibit. It really looks like something kids and adults would find interesting.
The Return of Habitat Park! Kohl's has am expansive 2-acre outdoor nature park that has been undergoing renovation. But on June 3rd, Habitat Park is set to reopen. Improvement include the addition of a sensory garden and climbing structures designed to explore animal movement.
Family Concerts. The Kohls also features special events all summer long. On Friday, June 19th, Ralph's World will be performing (this is a kid must-see).
So it is worth it -- even if you have to endure some traffic on the way there. The kids will love it.

This Week's Must Do: The Modern Wing
May 15, 2009
As you have no doubt heard or read, the much-touted Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago opens tomorrow. Everybody is talking about it. I think that some parents don't think of the Art Institute as a great destination for younger children, but that isn't the case. I have written before about ways to make your child fall in love with the Art Institute and have made many trips there with my art-lovin' five-year-old. Kids love this place, trust me.
If you haven't taken advantage of the family-friendly programming at the Art Institute, now is a great time to check it out. To celebrate the unveiling of the new Modern Wing, admission is FREE from May 16th through the 22nd (in lieu of admission, the museum is asking that food donations be made to the Chicago Food Depository). The new education space is prominently located on the first floor of the Modern Wing and promises to offer tons of new programming options for families (truthfully, I found the old education space to be a bit lacking and uninspiring so I am excited to make a visit to the new facilities). Over the next few months, the Art Institute is adding some great new programming for families so check out the calendar to see what works for your family. Also, beginning the week of Memorial Day, admission on Thursday and Friday evenings fro 5:00 until 9:00 is free. Another great cultural opportunity for us lucky Chicagoans!

Get Greener at the Green Festival!
May 14, 2009
I love an event where EVERYONE in the family has a great time and gets something out of the experience. These types of outings are hard to come by (when is the last time you heard your husband and your three-year-old declare the same thing a really good time?). Mark your calendars for this weekend (May 16th and 17th) for the third annual Green Festival because it is that type of "good times for the whole gang" event.
The Green Festival is a joint project of Global Exchange and Green America, two leading nonprofits dedicated to environmental and social justice. The festival aims to show our community just how economical and attainable aneco-friendly lifestyle is.
Adults can learn about everything from local sustainable business to green building to vegan food. In my opinion, the programming highlight is an appearance by Alice Waters (yipee!). Not just an event for grown-up green enthusiasts, the Chicago Green Festival provides engaging activities for the next generation of budding activists in the Organic Valley Green Kids’ Zone. Planned programming includes making salad in a jar, learning about vermicomposting, and storytelling.
The event takes place at Navy Pier on May 16th and 17th. Admission is $15 for two days/$10 for students or those who arrive by bike or public transit. And the kiddos are free. For more details check out the website www.greenfestivals.org.

Who's Home at the Morton Arboretum?
May 11, 2009
Summer brings lots of special exhibits to many of the already fabulous family-friendly destinations in and around Chicago. Over the next few weeks, I am going to highlight a few of coming attractions that you should put on your summer "must do" list.
Beginning May 22nd (and running through November 15th), head out to the Morton Arboretum to check out their new "Animal Houses" exhibit. Kids will have a chance to touch and explore eleven different animal habitats built to human scale. This is a truly interactive way to learn about animal habitats. The largest animal house is the 40 by 60 foot Pollywog Pond. Kids will have the sensation of being underwater while watching polliwogs swimming overhead. Other highlights include a squirrels drey and a spider's web. Throughout the summer, the drop-in programming in the Children's Garden (which is always awesome) will tie into the theme of animal houses.
We've got this special exhibit on our summer to-do list -- don't forget to add it to yours!

Whatcha Doing This Weekend (May 9th-10th)?
May 08, 2009
As always, there is so much good stuff for families to do in Chicago this weekend (or for Dad and the kids to do while Mom enjoys a spa day). Here are your best bets.
Family Days at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Collaborate on a community-based mural and learn more about creating public art in your own neighborhood (cool, right?). The event takes place on Saturday, May 9th from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
A Family Affair at the Menomomee Club. If you haven't ever taken advantage of any of the great programming for kids at the Menomonee Club, this weekend is a good time to check it out. This is an event for the whole family featuring an appearance by Ms. Lori, a sing-a-long, storytelling and arts and crafts. Tickets and more info available on the website.
Celebrate National Train Day! Head on over to Union Station for a day of train celebration. Events include train tours, train driving simulators, model train displays, face painting, juggling, and face painting.
Visit the National Train Day website for more details.
Happy Mother's Day to all you Chicago Mamas!
Great Chicago Places and Spaces
May 05, 2009
Animals in Architecture. Take a waking tour and spot animals that architects designed as part of the building. The tour kicks off from the Chicago Architecture Foundation (224 S. Michigan) at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and strollers are welcome!
Chicago Cultural Center and Millennium Park Treasure Hunt. Families can spot the architectural "gems" of the Chicago Cultural Center and the "jewels" of Millennium Park on this self-guided tour. Interested families can pick up a treasure map at the information desk at the Cultural Center (78 E. Washington Street) or at the Millennium Park Welcome Center (201 E. Randolph).
Lego Block Party. if you have little ones who love to build with blocks, you will want to mark the family calendar for this event. Join with local architecture and art students to build colorful urbanscapes using Legos. This event takes place from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Cultural Center.

Get Gardening
May 04, 2009
We planted our backyard vegetable garden over the weekend and my two preschoolers had a ton of fun helping out. If you want to introduce your child to gardening but don't have the space or inclination to do it at home, I have two suggestions for you.
First, stop by the Edible Garden at the Lincoln Park Farm in the Zoo . This beautiful organic garden is sponsored by the Green City Market. On market days (Wednesday and Saturday mornings), your kids can learn about organic gardening by actually doing it themselves. The staff will encourage your kids to help pull weeds or harvest ripe tomatoes. When you have had your fill of gardening, the rest of the Farm in the Zoo attractions await you (you know, petting goats and all of that other good stuff).
Another great option is a new program at The Garfield Park Conservatory called Little Green Thumb Wednesdays . We have long been fans of the indoor children's programming at the Conservatory (especially the Morning Glories for Preschoolers Program), but we can't wait to check out the new children's activities in the outdoor Demonstration Garden on Wednesdays from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. The program kicks off this Wednesday, May 6th. Activities will include planting pretend vegetables in the soil box and using play wheel barrels (and I would guess that there would be activities using actual plants and soil as well).
Happy planting with your little horticulturists!

Go Fly a Kite!
April 30, 2009
I want to tell you about my very favorite, free, family-friendly event in the city: Mayor Daley's Kite Festival. This awesome (and I mentioned that it was free, right?) event takes place each year in the fall and the spring. We went last October and we all loved it - my husband declared it his favorite kids activity ever.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 2nd and bring your family down to Montrose Harbor for a fun-filled day. Each kid gets to create their own kite. Kite professional are on hand and the event includes all sorts of other activities like face painting and storytelling. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Maybe even pack a picnic and head over to the beach when you have had your fill of kite fun.
And if that isn't enough kite flying excitement for you, on Sunday, May 3rd, the Brookfield Zoo is hosting a Party for the Planet and Kite Festival. The event features earth-themed music, crafts, and activities including kite flying.

Feeding Frenzy! Good Food for Your Family
April 28, 2009
Part of being a parent is feeding your child healthy food. Easier said than done, right? Every parent I know struggles with picky eaters, busy schedules that don't always allow for family meals and shrinking family food budgets. To put it simply: eating good food can sometimes be a hard thing to do. But rather than throw up your arms and succumb to the lure of the golden arches, try to incorporate some strategies to simplify your meal planning and preparation.
Let the Food Come to You. I don't know about you, but grocery shopping with three kids in tow can sometimes be more trouble than it is worth. I have started using home delivery services for some of our groceries. Check out Irv and Shelley's Fresh Picks for amazing organic produce and local, hormone-free meats. When you are in a time crunch, another good standby is Peapod. Sure, the prices aren't fabulous, but they have a decent selection of natural and organic products and most importantly, they bring the food you need to make a healthy dinner right to your door.
Shop Local. If you are looking for fresh, healthy food for your family, make a local farmer's market your first stop. My favorite market is the Green City Market which returns to its outdoor location on May 6th (we can't wait). Stock up on all of spring's offerings including lettuces, radishes, and ramps. If you are looking for a farmer's market near you, check out this list of farmer's markets in the city of Chicago. If you want farmer's market goodies but can't make it to the market yourself, visit the Green Grocer. Owner Cassie picks up requested items from the Green City Market and you can pick them up from her store (how awesome is that?).
Join a CSA. If you want to feed your family locally grown fruits and veggies all summer long, think about signing up for a CSA, which is short for Community Supported Agriculture. Here is how it works: you pay up front for a share of the crop over the growing season. Each week you get a box full of produce fresh from the farm. This model is good for farmers and good for you and your family. If you are looking for more information on CSAs in our area, check out Local Harvest.
Grow Your Own. Kids love to dig in the dirt. Put them to work and start a little vegetable garden. You don't need to have a big yard -- a container, some sunshine and some inexpensive supplies will do. Learn more from my story on gardening with kids in the spring issue of Going Places Magazine.
Feeding kids can be a struggle but keep in mind that if you are offering them delicious, healthy foods and you are modeling good eating habits, eventually they will give beets and artichokes a try.

April 27, 2009
Summer camp doesn't have to be all about swimming and craft projects. There seems to be a camp for everything - from princess training to beginning space exploration. If you are looking for a different experience for your preschooler this summer, here are a few less traditional summer camps in and around Chicago.
The Art Institute. At the Art Institute, families with children age six and up can sign up for Family Art Camp (sounds like fun for Mom and Dad too). One session focuses on the new Modern Wing and the other explores architecture of the new wing and the sculpture in the Lurie Garden. Visit the website for more information.
Joffrey Ballet. Another fun option is the Joffrey Ballet where 3-8 year olds can recreate scenes from Cinderella, complete with props and costumes.
Imagination Training Camp at Bubbles Academy. If you are looking to indulge your little one with some summer make-believe, check out the offerings at Bubbles Academy. One week focuses on pirates and mermaids and another is devoted to superhero training. Bubbles offers camps by the day so you have lots of flexibility.
Lil' Buds Theatre Company Summer Camp. If you have a budding thespian at your house, check out this fun summer camp offering. Lil' Buds Theatre Company has a program called "Baby Buds" for three to six yearolds that focuses on imagination and creative movement.
With all of the summer camp options out there, you might find it difficult to choose the right one. My advice would be to choose SOON because many of these camps will fill up quickly.

Whatcha Doing This Weekend (April 23rd-26th)?
April 23, 2009
Spring rolls on in Chicago and this weekend is full of more great family events and activities. Here are your best bets.
A Teddy Bear Picnic at the Suzuki-Orff School of Music. If you are looking for a sweet, family-oriented activity, bring your favorite child (and their favorite teddy bear) to the Suzuki-Orff School at 1148 W. Chicago Avenue on Sunday at noon for this free event. Bring a picnic blanket and sack lunches to this indoor picnic and hear a mini recital. Visit the website to learn more or make your reservation.
Tree Whisperers at the Morton Arboretum. In my opinion, there is no better place to celebrate Arbor Day than the Morton Arboretum. This place is beautiful and family-friendly. This weekend between the hours of 11:00 and 4:00, take part in the Treewhisperers Program. Write poems and environmental messages using recycled paper, leaves, grasses, and other natural materials. Don't forget to check out the wonderful Children's Garden and meander through the maze while you are there.
Little Miss Ann Band. Head down to the Chicago Children's Museum (always a favorite spot) and catch this (FREE FREE) concert starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 23rd.
Happy weekending to you all!

Guest Post: Seven Tips for Successful Breastfeeding
April 20, 2009
I am excited to welcome guest posters Suzanne Schlosberg and Sarah Bowen Shea who have recently written a book titled The Essential Breastfeeding Log. They each breastfed their twins for at least 9 months and have seven tips to pass along.
I am currently breastfeeding for the third time around and think that all breastfeeding moms (even the more experienced ones) can always benefit from a tip or two.
1. Remember: Just because it's natural doesn't necessarily mean it's easy.
Virtually all babies are capable of breastfeeding, and virtually all moms can produce enough milk. But it just may take more time and
effort than expected.
2. Educate yourself
The more you know about breastfeeding, the better, so take a breastfeeding class offered by your hospital. Also, you can join chat
rooms and check in with other nursing moms who are in your boat, whether you have a preemie in the NICU or a 6-month-old who seems to be self-weaning.
3. Get the gear
Sure, all that is really required for breastfeeding are breasts, but we recommend investing in a reliable pump, a few good-quality nursing bras, and a supportive nursing pillow.
4. Call in the pros
Many U.S. hospitals have lactation consultants on staff who can offer advice and hands-on help during your postpartum stay. Also, ask the nursing staff for guidance; they've been around more than their share of new moms and newborns.
5. Set short-term goals
When you were pregnant, you may have declared, "I'm going to breastfeed for one year," only to feel overwhelmed, even demoralized,
by that goal once your baby arrives and it's not smooth sailing. If this happens, take it in steps.
6. Involve other people
Sure, you're the one with the breasts, so there's only so much someone else can do. Still, it's important for partners to support each other on the breastfeeding front. And don't be shy about asking friends and neighbors to bring meals and to help around the house.
7. Stay hydrated, get your rest, and eat well
The physiological system that drives lactation depends on a variety of hormonal and physical factors, many of which are influenced by
hydration, energy, and sleep. In other words, if you're a dehydrated wreck, your milk isn't going to flow like the Colorado River.
Whatcha Doing This Weekend (The Earth Day Edition)?
April 16, 2009
With Earth Day just around the corner, many of the best events this weekend have a "green" theme. Here is a round-up of some of the best things going on in Chicago this weekend.
Critters and Bugs at the Old Town School of Music. On Sunday, April 19th, get the kids decked out in their favorite bug outfits and enjoy an Earth Day-themed concert at the Old Town School of Music. Visit the website for more information and to purchase tickets.
Earth Keepers at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. On Saturday, April 18th, stop by the (always wonderful) Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum for their Earth Keeper seminar where kids and adults can sing songs and tell tales about Mother Earth.
Chicago Park District Clean Up at Humboldt Park. Why not show your kids what it means to celebrate Earth Day by getting out there and doing something to take care of our planet. On Saturday, April 18th, meet up at Humboldt Park to clean up, mulch, make a craft, and celebrate Earth Day with other like-minded families.
Even though Earth Day might seem like a cliche at this point, don't let this weekend pass you by without taking the opportunity to talk to your kids about the importance of respecting Mother Earth and her resources.

Composting 101: Let Worms Eat Your Garbage!
April 13, 2009
Do your kids love dirt and worms? Are you looking for an eco-friendly family project to celebrate Earth Day? I have the perfect idea for you. Try vermicomposting with your kids.
Vermicomposting is the process of using worms to eat your kitchen garbage and turn it into nutrient-right compost material for your garden. The traditional composting process can be a bit intimidating, but vermicomposting is an inexpensive, straightforward process that any family can do (no matter how much space you have).
In order to get started vermicomposting, you need three things: red wiggler worms, a home for your new "pets," and the right kind of kitchen scraps. Red wiggler worms are available from a variety of suppliers. Check out the Urban Worm Girl for worms and other supplies. You can buy a "wormerie" or make your own. We use plastic bins with holes drilled in the lid. We added slightly damp, shredded paper and the worms along with some of the dirt they came with. We feed them kitchen waste including coffee grinds, fruit and vegetable scraps and eggshells. In a few months, we will have compost ready to sprinkle on our garden!
If you are looking for help getting your vermicomposting bin started, check out the upcoming "Fabulous Fertilizers" workshop at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum on April 18th.
For more details and additional local resources, check out my article in the April issue of Chicago Parent Magazine .

Whatcha Doing This Weekend (April 10th-12th)?
April 10, 2009
Between spring break and Passover and Easter celebrations, I suspect that most families are having a busy week. If you are looking for some activities for the weekend, here is a round up of what is happening.
Chicago Park District Bunny Events. If you are looking to participate in an Easter egg hunt or meet the Easter Bunny, the Chicago Park District has an event for you. Check out the website for a full listing of events (most of them free).
Spring Greening Day. Stop by the Museum of Contemporary Art for Spring Greening Day on Saturday to kick off your family's Earth Day Celebration. Activities include making collages and magnets. The event runs from 11:00 until 3:00 p.m.
Brunch with the Bunny at the Brookfield Zoo. On both Saturday and Sunday morning the whole family can enjoy breakfast while getting up close and personal with the Easter Bunny! Reservations are required so check out the website for more information.
Happy weekend to all of you (even if you are just staying home to dye eggs like we are).

Great Green Reads for Earth Day
April 07, 2009
Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd and books are a great way to introduce children to the idea of living "greener lives." Here are a few good choices for your Earth Day reading.
The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. This is the original ecological warning book for kiddos. Dr. Seuss understood that we were headed down a dangerous path long ago. Start your reading here.
The New 50 Things Kids Can Do To save the Earth. This book educates kids about the threats facing our planet and gives them tons of great tips and projects ideas that they can do themselves. I like the empowering message of this book.
Curious George Plants a Tree by H.A. Rey. This book tells the tale of Curious George's overzealous efforts at recycling (stealing all of his neighbors newspapers from their doormats). Kids will love all of the things there are to love about Curious George and his mischievous ways and adults will love the tips and positive message about working together to help the environment.
What Can You Do With an Old Red Shoe: An Green Activity Book About Reuse by Anna Alter. This book is another great choice for empowering kids to get up and do something to help the environment. Projects include melting down old crayons into drawing cubes and reusing that old shower curtain as an apron.
Read about the challenges facing our environment, discuss how your family can make a difference and then put those plans into action.

Spring Has Sprung! (Your Guide to Must-Do Warm Weather Activities in Chicago)
March 31, 2009
Great Children's Theater in Chicago (The Spring Edition)
March 30, 2009
As you have probably noticed, Chicago has tons to offer preschoolers -- including many quality theater productions. Lots and lots of them. Here is a round up of some of the current productions around town that might be of interest to your family.
Mary Poppins. If you are looking to introduce your child to the phrase "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," then you will want to check out the new musical Mary Poppins. This critically acclaimed show is at the Cadillac Palace Theater through July 12th. One word of warning -- this production seems to have some "dark" moments so it might not be for the younger set.
Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle. This show based on the kids' book series runs from March 14th through May 3rd. Recommended for children ages five and up. Performances are at the Lifeline Theater (6912 N. Glenwood, Chicago)
Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Performances of this popular children's tale are at the Beverly Arts Center through May 29th. This is a production of the very popular Chicago Kids Company.
So Chicago theater-goers . . . any other productions out there that you and your kids have enjoyed together recently?

Whatcha Doing This Weekend (March 26th - 28th)?
March 26, 2009
Once again, this weekend has lots of family-friendly offerings! Here are my top three picks.
Spring Into Action Day. Stop by the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum on Saturday, March 28th and take advantage of some great programming -- from learning about seasonal foods in Club Sprout to the adopt and release a butterfly program. Visit the website for all of the details.
Malott Japanese Garden Spring Weekend at the Chicago Botanic Garden. If you haven't ever visited this serene and beautiful spot, I highly recommend that you do so. This weekend features musical performances and storytelling between 11:00 a.m and 4:00 p.m.
Ralph's World. Ralph Covert and his band are a big hit with kids and their parents. On Sunday, March 29th, head over to the Old Town School of Music at 4544 N. Lincoln Avenue for concerts at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Tickets at $17.
Speaking of music, be sure to check back on Monday when I will have a chance for you to win a great (and I mean great) children's CD plus tickets to an upcoming concert!

Best Birthday Party Venues
March 24, 2009
If you have a preschooler, chances are that you have attended your share of birthday parties (I know that I have). City-dwellers often don't have the option of hosting a basic backyard-birthday party due to space limitations. Luckily, Chicago is home to some great birthday party venues (no matter what your budget is). Here are a few spots where you can fete your little one on his big day.
Pump It Up. Now, I have to be honest and say that this isn't my favorite place on earth - however, my kids would certainly disagree. If you have a large group of rambunctious kids, this might be the place for you. Your guests can jump, slide and climb their little hearts out and you can sit back while the staff takes care of the pizza and cake afterwards. This definitely seems to be a hot birthday party spot with the preschool set.
The Garfield Park Conservatory. I am wild about this place -- and my kids are too. I think that this is a great pick for birthday parties for preschoolers. You can rent a room to do the cupcake and juice box thing and your guests can participate in all of the family-friendly activities going on at the Conservatory (scavenger hunts, dig pit, etc.). The kids will love to spend a few hours soaking up the warmth in this urban treasure -- and so will their parents.
Your Local Park District Field house or Park. If you are looking to host a low-key event but you don't have the space, check out your local park district facility. Many field houses or outdoor picnic areas are available for a very reasonable price. I think that this is a great option -- particularly for those summer birthdays when everyone just wants to hang out at the park any way. My first choice for this type of birthday is Adams Playground Park where your guests can take advantage of the water park facilities.
What local birthday party venues do you love?

Celebrate Earth Hour with Your Kids
March 23, 2009
Can your family devote one hour to turning off all of your lights and powering down your electronics to raise awareness about global warming? In addition to being a chance to teach your little ones about conserving our earth's resources, you will also have an extra hour of quiet, family time.
On March 28, 2009 between the hours of 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., join with the thousands of other local houses and business that will be celebrating Earth Hour by going dark. Use Earth Hour as an opportunity to talk to your children about the importance of doing our part to conserve the earth's resources. While the lights are out, sit together by candlelight and play games, sing songs or . . . just talk to each other. Have a late night "snack" on a picnic blanket. Go outside and take a peek at the stars in the sky.
Visit the Earth Hour website for more information and to sign up to participate.

Whatcha Doing This Weekend (March 20th-22nd)?
March 19, 2009
Now that we got a peek of the warm weather headed our way, I am more and more eager for spring every day. I found lots of great, family-friendly activities going on this weekend that will get you into a spring mood too!
Bin There, Dump That. Did you know that you can use worms to eat your garbage and create compost for your garden? I swear, you really can. It's calledvermicomposting and its simple. And your kids will think it is totally awesome. Stop by the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum on Saturday for a workshop on setting up your own bin. For $8, your child can learn the basics of vermicomposting and walk away with his own, shoebox-sized bin. We went last weekend and my kids really enjoyed it (plus we have new "pets" under our kitchen sink).

Guest Post: Choosing Games for Your Preschooler
March 16, 2009
Board games are cool again. In this economy, "game nights" make sense -- they're a fun, inexpensive way for families to bond and reconnect.
But 4-year olds can hardly be expected to sit still for 5 minutes, let alone participate in classic standbys like Monopoly or Pictionary. What sort of games should parents play with their preschoolers on Family Game Night or any night?
In today's guest post, toy expert Jim Silver discusses features that parents should look for when choosing games for their preschoolers. Jim is a widely recognized and often-resourced authority on the toy and licensing industries, having worked within the publishing and toy industries for more than 20 years. He's also editor-in-chief for www.TimeToPlayMag.com, a great website parents can go to for toy, gaming and entertainment information. Read below to learn 5 things parents should look for in a preschool game.

How to Talk to Your Kids About The Economy and Job Loss
March 12, 2009
Do you know any family who hasn't been affected by the recession? I sure don't. On Saturday morning, I am going to be on the NBC5 Saturday Morning News with tips on how to talk to your kids about how tough economic times are affecting your family. Tune in if you are awake around 6:15 a.m on Saturday! Here is a little preview.
(1) Don't NOT talk about job loss or economic uncertainty. When tough economic times hit home, I think that many parents' first reaction is to keep the bad news from the kids. However, children are very intuitive and they are able to sense when Mom and Dad are stressed. Kids seem to always know when something is going on at home. Rather than try to keep the news of a job loss or potential home foreclosure from your children, discuss the situation with your kids in a way that is sensitive to their concerns.
(2) Be reassuring. Acknowledge the economic difficulties facing your family, but focus on the positive. For example if your family has to downsize, say, "Yes, Mommy and Daddy are talking about the fact that we may have to move to another house, but the most important thing is that we are always going to be together, even if we aren't living in this house. We will always be able to live together, eat dinner together and play together." Frame the conversation in terms that kids can understand -- reassure them that they will continue to have the things that are important to them (and leave out any of the ugly details that would make them confused or frightened). When offering reassurance, focus on the things in your child's life that are constant and reliable - -hugs, bedtime routines, family dinners, play dates.
(3) Keep the same routine, just scale it back. Kids thrive on consistency -- particularly in times of stress or change. So if your family usually went out for deep dish pizza together on Friday nights and your budget doesn't allow for dining out anymore, stay home and make pizzas together. Tighter budgets don't mean that we have to give up all of the family-friendly activities that we love. We are lucky to live in a town with TONS of free or inexpensive activities. For example, if most summer camps are out of your price range, look into some of the low-cost options available through the Chicago Park District. Museum admission for a family of four can really add up -- but many of Chicago's most popular museums offer free admission days that you can take advantage of. This is also a great time to get reacquainted with free services like the Chicago Public Library where you can enjoy free story times, movie rentals, etc.
Keep your focus on what is really important -- the well-being of your family.

Guest Post: Nutrition Tips for Busy Moms and Dads
March 02, 2009
I know, I know, being a parent is tough. We're so focused on taking
care of our children that sometimes we forget to take care of
ourselves. Nutrition-wise, we often take the quick and easy way out
-- a cookie here, a bag of chips there, a cup of coffee for breakfast,
half of our children's mac-n-cheese at dinnertime . I'm as guilty as
anyone. But what's a busy parent to do? Today's guest posters, Bonnie
Johnson and Deanna Segrave-Daly, serve up five great ways parents can
maintain a healthy lifestyle even in the midst of all the childhood
chaos. As registered dieticians, they know the ins and outs of good
nutrition. Even more important, they are moms who understand that our
busy, crazy schedules means we need quick, manageable solutions -- and
all the help we can get.
------------------------------
5 Basic Boosts for Busy Parents
From Two Spicy Moms
Bonnie Johnson, MS, RD and Deanna Segrave-Daly, RD, LDN (on behalf of
trim®)
1) Kick Up Your Heels - Don't make exercise a daunting chore. Have a
20-minute dance party with the kids. Everyone gets to pick one song.
Try out different rhythms or steps like hula, cha-cha, the twist or
the oldie-but-goodie chicken dance.
2) Faster Fruits- Often, we are so focused on getting our children to
eat healthy, we forget about ourselves (sound familiar?) And most of
us need to at least double our daily dose of fruit. So, instead of
trying to count that strawberry cheesecake as a serving, try:
- 1/2 cup applesauce - Add a dash of cinnamon and/or nutmeg
- 1 can of trim® Juice drink - New from Tree Top, one can
- counts as a 1/2 cup of fruit serving and comes in yum flavors like Mango Peach and Strawberry Kiwi)
- 1/4 cup dried fruit - Try tossed into cereal, over a salad or eaten on the go

3) Satiety is the new buzzword in healthy eating-it's that feeling of
satisfaction after a meal or snack. It makes sense - if you are
satisfied longer, you won't scarf down those extra calories you really
don't need (like the remnants of junior's PB&J.) Fiber has great
satiating power. Shoot for getting more fiber by choosing cereals
with five grams or more fiber per serving, tossing a can of beans into
a pasta dish, having a small bowl of popcorn or enjoying a single
serve can of trim® which has three grams of fiber per serving.
4) Get Some Extra Zs - That's sounds dreamy but how do you get your
head on the pillow when you are multitasking long after the kids are
in bed? Research shows that a good night sleep can reduce stress,
improve your memory and even increase your success at weight loss.
While experts recommend at least 8 hours a night, start by going to
bed just 15 minutes early. Do that every night for a month - and see
how you feel (and if you can up it another 15 minutes.) And yes, this
is one of Deanna's New Year's resolutions.
5) Cover Your Bases - As dietitians, we recommend getting your
vitamins and minerals from food first. But as moms, we know you can't
have it all. Add a basic multivitamin to your morning routine just to
be sure. But remember, it's called a supplement because it SUPPLEMENTS
your diet (rather than replaces food) - and really, we're all about
keeping as much tasty and healthy food in your diet as possible!)

I am excited to welcome Lindsay Maldonado, Programs Director at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum as a guest author today. Lindsay grew up in Chicago’s Lakeview Neighborhood and as a kid in the city was lucky enough to find her own nature sanctuary in her grandparent’s backyard. Her family was the first to teach her to appreciate nature and now, with a Masters in child development and a growing career in Environmental Education, she can share her love and appreciation for all things green. As the Coordinator of Family and Children’s Programs at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum Lindsay has the opportunity to connect some of the youngest minds to nature. She prides herself in being an educator, a lover of nature, and most of all is proud to be a life long learner.
