Summer in the City: Four Family-Friendly Must-Do's
May 22, 2009
Summer in Chicago is the best. Summer in Chicago with little kiddos is even better. There is so much great stuff to do over the next few months. Don't get overwhelmed. Keep it simple. Keep it focused on family. Here are four things on our summer must-do list.
The Beach. We are so lucky to live in a city with such a beautiful beachfront. If you are looking for a family-friendly spot, check out these recommendations.
Millennium Park. Splash in the fountain. Have a picnic dinner. Catch a concert. Wander through the gardens. Take advantage of the Target Family Fun Festival. You won't believe how much there is to do. And it is all FREE (my favorite part).
The Edible Garden. Give your kids the chance to get their hands dirty and learn about organic gardening at the Edible Garden. This program is sponsored by the Green City Market and takes place in the Farm in the Zoo at the Lincoln Park Zoo on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. It is truly a chance for your kids to get a hands-on experience with how food grows.
Toddler Tunes and Turtles. This is one of my favorite Chicago Park District Programs. Toddler Tunes and Turtlestakes place in various parks throughout the summer. It is a laid-back, free family activity. Kids can play dress up, sing-a-long and pet a real turtle. Check out the Chicago Park District website to find out when this program is coming to a park near you.
Wishing you lots of fun in the sun with your little ones -- no matter what is on your summer agenda!

Whatcha Doing This Weekend (May 9th-10th)?
May 08, 2009
As always, there is so much good stuff for families to do in Chicago this weekend (or for Dad and the kids to do while Mom enjoys a spa day). Here are your best bets.
Family Days at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Collaborate on a community-based mural and learn more about creating public art in your own neighborhood (cool, right?). The event takes place on Saturday, May 9th from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
A Family Affair at the Menomomee Club. If you haven't ever taken advantage of any of the great programming for kids at the Menomonee Club, this weekend is a good time to check it out. This is an event for the whole family featuring an appearance by Ms. Lori, a sing-a-long, storytelling and arts and crafts. Tickets and more info available on the website.
Celebrate National Train Day! Head on over to Union Station for a day of train celebration. Events include train tours, train driving simulators, model train displays, face painting, juggling, and face painting.
Visit the National Train Day website for more details.
Happy Mother's Day to all you Chicago Mamas!
Whatcha Doing This Weekend (April 23rd-26th)?
April 23, 2009
Spring rolls on in Chicago and this weekend is full of more great family events and activities. Here are your best bets.
A Teddy Bear Picnic at the Suzuki-Orff School of Music. If you are looking for a sweet, family-oriented activity, bring your favorite child (and their favorite teddy bear) to the Suzuki-Orff School at 1148 W. Chicago Avenue on Sunday at noon for this free event. Bring a picnic blanket and sack lunches to this indoor picnic and hear a mini recital. Visit the website to learn more or make your reservation.
Tree Whisperers at the Morton Arboretum. In my opinion, there is no better place to celebrate Arbor Day than the Morton Arboretum. This place is beautiful and family-friendly. This weekend between the hours of 11:00 and 4:00, take part in the Treewhisperers Program. Write poems and environmental messages using recycled paper, leaves, grasses, and other natural materials. Don't forget to check out the wonderful Children's Garden and meander through the maze while you are there.
Little Miss Ann Band. Head down to the Chicago Children's Museum (always a favorite spot) and catch this (FREE FREE) concert starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 23rd.
Happy weekending to you all!

Seeing Green in Chicago
March 17, 2009
Since today is St. Patrick's Day (and because I am a good Irish girl), I have green on my mind. The weather is beautiful, spring is around the corner and little pockets of green (like the beginnings of my daffodils) are popping up everywhere. Here are a few ideas on places to get your "green" fix until spring really takes hold.
The Garfield Park Conservatory. This spot is one of my very favorite, family-friendly destinations. Admission is free and the Conservatory offers tons of programming for kids. We love the "digs" in the Children's Garden on Wednesday afternoons and the "Morning Glories" drop-in series for preschoolers on Monday mornings. Be sure to check out theazaleas that are in bloom right now -- they are totally spectacular. Your kids will have a blast and you will love the serene, beautiful surroundings.
The Green City Market. If you are longing for summer mornings spent picking up fresh produce at your favorite farmer's market, you can get your "green" fix at the Market at the Museum at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum . Although you won't be able to stock up on your favorite berries and summer veggies, you will be able to pick up lots of tasty supplies -- including breads, pastries, cheeses and jarred items. The next market is scheduled for March 21st.
Green Parent Chicago. If you are looking to make some eco-friendly changes in your family and home this spring (like I am), you should check out the website Green Parent Chicago. This site has information on all of the latest "green" family events around town, plus great ideas for "green," eco-friendly crafts and activities.
The Green Grocer. If spring has you in the mood to cook fresh, organic foods for your family, you must check out my favorite new grocery store. The Green Grocer (located at Grand and Noble) has wonderful organic, local food offerings. I love to stock up on really quality food here and know that I am feeding my family the healthiest food available. Check out the website for their frequent tastings and in-store events.
The Green Mama Cafe Series at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. If you are a parent of a young child and looking to lead a more eco-friendly lifestyle, check out this series of classes by Manda Aufochs Gillespie (aka The Green Mama). Topics include cloth diapering and safer toys.
Where do you go to get your "green" fix in Chicago?

How to Talk to Your Kids About The Economy and Job Loss
March 12, 2009
Do you know any family who hasn't been affected by the recession? I sure don't. On Saturday morning, I am going to be on the NBC5 Saturday Morning News with tips on how to talk to your kids about how tough economic times are affecting your family. Tune in if you are awake around 6:15 a.m on Saturday! Here is a little preview.
(1) Don't NOT talk about job loss or economic uncertainty. When tough economic times hit home, I think that many parents' first reaction is to keep the bad news from the kids. However, children are very intuitive and they are able to sense when Mom and Dad are stressed. Kids seem to always know when something is going on at home. Rather than try to keep the news of a job loss or potential home foreclosure from your children, discuss the situation with your kids in a way that is sensitive to their concerns.
(2) Be reassuring. Acknowledge the economic difficulties facing your family, but focus on the positive. For example if your family has to downsize, say, "Yes, Mommy and Daddy are talking about the fact that we may have to move to another house, but the most important thing is that we are always going to be together, even if we aren't living in this house. We will always be able to live together, eat dinner together and play together." Frame the conversation in terms that kids can understand -- reassure them that they will continue to have the things that are important to them (and leave out any of the ugly details that would make them confused or frightened). When offering reassurance, focus on the things in your child's life that are constant and reliable - -hugs, bedtime routines, family dinners, play dates.
(3) Keep the same routine, just scale it back. Kids thrive on consistency -- particularly in times of stress or change. So if your family usually went out for deep dish pizza together on Friday nights and your budget doesn't allow for dining out anymore, stay home and make pizzas together. Tighter budgets don't mean that we have to give up all of the family-friendly activities that we love. We are lucky to live in a town with TONS of free or inexpensive activities. For example, if most summer camps are out of your price range, look into some of the low-cost options available through the Chicago Park District. Museum admission for a family of four can really add up -- but many of Chicago's most popular museums offer free admission days that you can take advantage of. This is also a great time to get reacquainted with free services like the Chicago Public Library where you can enjoy free story times, movie rentals, etc.
Keep your focus on what is really important -- the well-being of your family.

Best Toy Stores Around Town
March 10, 2009
A great toy store can be hard to come by. I don't just mean any old toy store -- I am talking about a store that offers the kind of toys that you would actually want to have around your house. Luckily, Chicago is full of stores offering the best in children's toys, games and art supplies. I know that I feel like I am constantly running out to pick up gifts for all of those birthday parties that my kids are invited to. You too, right?
Here are some of my favorite toy spots around town.
Building Blocks. This place is chock-full of toys. Seriously, the store is stocked with toys from floor to ceiling -- everything a kid could ever want or need. Despite being initially overwhelmed by all of the offerings, I have found that I really love the selection. Building Blocks offers educational, wooden toys that inspire kids to use their imaginations rather than the loud, plastic contraptions that many toy stores seem to hawk these days. The sales people are always willing to offer suggestions. Check out their new Wicker Park location -- another toy heaven.
Pottery Barn Kids and Land of Nod. I usually like to support small, local businesses, but when it comes to shopping at toy stores with kids in tow, I have to admit that I sometimes head out to Pottery Barn Kids or Land of Nod. Frankly, kids and toy stores don't mix well together in my experience. No matter how many times I explain that no one is coming out of the place with a new toy for themselves, my kiddos still ask me for a million things. At both Pottery Barn Kids and Land of Nod, the kids can play with the fun stuff out on the floor (like doll houses, art easels, farm sets) while I do my quick shopping and it is a bit less painful for all of us.
Toys et Cetera. This local chain is another sure thing when it comes to picking out quality toys for your little ones (or their friends). The store stocks a range of items for kids of all ages.
What about you? Any great toys stores around town that you love?

Guest Post: Spring Into Green!
February 27, 2009
I am excited to welcome Lindsay Maldonado, Programs Director at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum as a guest author today. Lindsay grew up in Chicago’s Lakeview Neighborhood and as a kid in the city was lucky enough to find her own nature sanctuary in her grandparent’s backyard. Her family was the first to teach her to appreciate nature and now, with a Masters in child development and a growing career in Environmental Education, she can share her love and appreciation for all things green. As the Coordinator of Family and Children’s Programs at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum Lindsay has the opportunity to connect some of the youngest minds to nature. She prides herself in being an educator, a lover of nature, and most of all is proud to be a life long learner.

Sure, involving a buddy means having to share, but that small concession is usually worth it for all of the fun that a good friend brings to the equation. Here are a few things to do in Chicago that are most definitely better with a buddy.

Another fun-filled summer in Chicago is coming to an end today. Bummer, right?
